In this order:

Over two shifts, Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening:

(1) Finish creating the closed-captioning for the MuchMusic movie American Pie Presents Band Camp.

(2) Save two files onto two separate floppy discs: the transfer file, which the people in VTR use to apply the captions to the Beta master tape for broadcast; and the original Word author document, for internal archiving purposes.

(3) Put one disc back into circulation so the next person to work on a MuchMusic movie won't have to save their author doc onto a fresh blank disc before this one's been filled up.

(4) Normally, step (4) would be to place the other disc with the tapes and carry them over to VTR. In this case, the tapes are not yet available to go down, so place the disc in the "ready to go down" box. When the tapes go out on the shelf tomorrow, someone else will package the disc with them and take them all over to VTR. Your work is now done, and you may leave for the night.

(5) It is now the next day, Wednesday evening. Begin by proofreading the captions created by a co-worker for the interstitial VJ throws that will air on MuchMusic on Thursday.

(6) Collect the VJ Throws transfer disc from the storage box, and before creating the transfer file, make sure that all of the tapes are on the shelf, ready to go down.

(7) Notice that the tapes for Band Camp are still out on the table, which means that nobody has taken them down. Check the "ready to go down" box. If the MM-Movies transfer disc is not there, this can only mean that someone has taken the disc out of the box, saved their own MM-Movie transfer file onto it, and taken their tapes over to VTR, without bothering to take over the Band Camp tapes.

(9) Pick up the Band Camp tapes and the VJ Throws tapes and take both sets of tapes over to VTR. You will see a set of tapes for the MM-Movie Friday Night Lights sitting on the work-to-be-done shelf in VTR. Check the transfer disc packaged with the tapes; you will confirm that this is the same disc that you used when exporting the transfer file for Band Camp. As you suspected, someone has grabbed your disc and used it with their own set of tapes without taking yours over.

(10) Quietly cursing the lack of consideration on your colleague's part, go to the VTR workers and explain that, due to a miscommunication, the transfer files for two sets of tapes are on a single disc. This should not be a problem.

(11) On your way back to the CC department, keep cursing your colleague's clumsiness until it sinks in that this just doesn't make a lick of sense. This can't have been carelessness; anyone taking a disc out of the "ready to go down" box must have known that it was in use. Your co-workers aren't malicious, and as long as there are plenty of new, blank discs available -- which there are -- there's no reason why they would have needed to "steal" your disc rather than start a new one.

(12) You already know what you saw in the "ready to go down" box. It takes until now, step (12), for it to actually sink in.

(13) Double-check the "ready to go down" box, and confirm that last night, while carrying out steps (3) and (4), you misfiled the two discs, putting the author disc in the "ready to go down" box and putting the transfer disc back into circulation.

(14) Start cursing your own carelessness and unfounded paranoia. Go back to your computer and try to get on with life.

(15) Notice that the VJ Throws author document is still open on your computer, which means that you didn't close it after you created the transfer file in step (8), which is, you realise, because you were so distracted by step (7) that you forgot step (8) altogether.

(16) Call VTR and have the following conversation:
"Hi, it's Cameron. Did I just forget to--"
"Yes."
"I'll be right back."

(8) Create the transfer file for the VJ throws.

(17) Take the VJ Throws transfer disc over to VTR.

(18) Return to the CC department and e-mail your supervisor asking if you can please switch over to day shift as soon as it's convenient for you to do so. Please.

That was some outstanding work. Funny as all shit. Funny ‘cause it’s true.
